South Africa Inflation Surges, Raising Rate Hike Expectations

South Africa’s annual inflation accelerated more sharply than expected in June, heightening expectations that the central bank could raise interest rates again.

South Africa Inflation Surges, Raising Rate Hike Expectations

Data from Statistics South Africa showed headline consumer inflation rose to 5.0% in June from 4.5% in May, marking the fourth consecutive monthly increase and the highest annual inflation rate in two years. The reading exceeded economists’ forecast of 4.7%, signalling that price pressures remain more persistent than previously anticipated.

Transport costs were the biggest contributor to the increase after fuel prices surged in response to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The conflict involving Iran has pushed global oil prices higher, feeding into domestic fuel costs and increasing transportation expenses across South Africa’s economy.

Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, also climbed to 4.1% from 3.8% in May, exceeding market expectations. The increase suggests that underlying inflationary pressures are becoming more widespread beyond energy-related costs, posing a greater challenge for policymakers seeking to keep inflation under control.

The stronger-than-expected inflation reading has prompted investors to increase bets that the South African Reserve Bank will raise its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points at its upcoming monetary policy meeting. The central bank has maintained a cautious stance in recent months, warning that rising inflation expectations could threaten long-term price stability.

The Reserve Bank targets inflation of around 3%, well below the official target range of 3% to 6%. In its latest projections, the central bank raised its inflation forecasts for 2026 and 2027, citing higher global energy prices and deteriorating inflation expectations among households and businesses.

Higher borrowing costs could weigh on economic activity at a time when South Africa is trying to accelerate growth through infrastructure reforms and increased private investment. However, economists argue that containing inflation remains essential to preserving purchasing power, stabilising the rand and maintaining investor confidence in Africa’s most industrialised economy.

The June inflation figures come just days before the Reserve Bank announces its latest interest rate decision. With inflation gathering pace faster than expected and energy prices remaining elevated, policymakers face growing pressure to tighten monetary policy further, even as they seek to support an economy that continues to grapple with weak growth and structural challenges.
