The most frightening thing about artificial intelligence may not be that one day a machine will decide to destroy humanity.It may be that we have become so fascinated by that possibility that we no longer notice what is happening in front of us.

This week, the world seemed briefly united by a familiar science-fiction nightmare. AI systems had behaved in unexpected ways. Researchers warned that increasingly capable machines could eventually escape meaningful human control. Technology executives called for caution. Politicians joined the conversation. The prospect of machines becoming powerful enough to threaten human survival moved from the margins of AI research into the center of public discussion.
It is an extraordinary proposition. It is also an extraordinarily effective one.
Tell people that a machine might take their job and they may worry. Tell them it might make their children unemployable and they may become angry. Tell them it might quietly erode privacy, concentrate economic power or transform warfare, and the response becomes complicated.
Tell them it might kill everyone, and suddenly the argument becomes very simple. We have to stop it. That simplicity should make us cautious.
I do not mean that existential risk is imaginary. It is possible that sufficiently advanced AI systems could create dangers we are not equipped to control. Serious researchers should study that possibility, and governments should take catastrophic risks seriously.
But possibility is not probability, and probability is not inevitability. Somewhere along the way, those distinctions have begun to disappear.
We are remarkably good at imagining the end. There is something ancient about our fascination with technological apocalypse.
Every powerful technology eventually acquires a mythology around it. The mythology is rarely concerned only with what the technology can do. It becomes a story about what the technology says about us.
The printing press threatened established authority. Industrial machinery seemed capable of reducing human beings to extensions of factories. Nuclear weapons gave humanity the ability to destroy itself. Now AI has become the latest technology onto which we project our deepest anxieties.
But AI is unusual because it does something more psychologically potent than previous machines. It speaks.
It writes. It reasons, or at least appears to. It produces images, voices and arguments that can resemble the products of human thought.
And so we instinctively give it something we rarely give a steam engine or a semiconductor: a personality. We talk about what AI wants. We ask whether it is deceiving us. We wonder whether it understands us.
We imagine what it might do if it became angry, ambitious or autonomous. But the machine does not need a personality for its consequences to be profound. It only needs power. And power is something humans already understand.
Imagine that AI becomes extraordinarily capable. Who owns it? Who controls the computers on which it runs? Who determines what it is allowed to access? Who decides which decisions can be automated? Who carries the legal responsibility when it causes harm?
Who benefits from the productivity it creates? Who loses bargaining power when a machine can perform work that once required a human being?
Those questions are less dramatic than the image of a robot army. They are also considerably more urgent.
An autonomous system does not have to become conscious to cause damage. A machine does not need hatred to discriminate. It does not need ambition to displace workers. It does not need a desire for power to become a weapon.
Humans can give it all of those consequences without giving it any of those intentions. That is why I am increasingly skeptical of the tendency to describe AI as though it were an alien intelligence arriving from somewhere outside human society.
AI did not fall from the sky. We built it. We trained it on human-generated information. We connected it to human institutions.
We gave it access to human systems. We are deciding where to deploy it. And increasingly, we are deciding what authority to surrender to it.
The most important AI question may therefore not be what the machine will do to us. It may be what we will permit ourselves to do with the machine.
There is a subtle danger in concentrating too heavily on hypothetical catastrophe. If the greatest danger lies decades in the future, responsibility can always be postponed.
We can spend our intellectual energy imagining the superintelligent machine while neglecting the ordinary algorithm making consequential decisions today.
We can worry about a future machine escaping its creators while ignoring the institutions that are already escaping public scrutiny.
We can demand that future AI systems be aligned with humanity while failing to ask whose definition of humanity is being encoded into today’s systems.
Alignment sounds like a technical problem. Sometimes it is. But it is also a political and philosophical question. Aligned with whom? Aligned with which values?Aligned for whose benefit?
A system can be perfectly aligned with the interests of the institution that controls it and still produce outcomes that society considers unacceptable.
This is where the AI debate becomes much more interesting than the question of whether robots will kill us. Because the machine may not need to rebel.
We may simply give it too much authority. There is another reason I resist the idea that the AI community has reached some settled conclusion about existential risk. It has not.
There are researchers who believe advanced AI could eventually present catastrophic dangers. There are researchers who regard those scenarios as remote or highly uncertain. There are critics who believe the emphasis on extinction distracts from harms already affecting workers, communities and the environment.
There are companies that genuinely want stronger safety requirements. There are also companies that stand to benefit from regulatory systems that are easier for large incumbents to navigate than for smaller competitors.
There are governments that want AI to be safer. There are governments that also want to win the technological race.
These interests can overlap. They can also collide. That does not make every warning cynical. Nor does it make every proposal for regulation benevolent.
It simply means that AI safety is not occurring in a vacuum. It is occurring inside a struggle over money, power, national security, labor and technological dominance.
We should be capable of holding both ideas at once: a person can sincerely fear catastrophic AI and still benefit from the political consequences of that fear.
There is a strange irony in the way we discuss superintelligence. We imagine an intelligence vastly more capable than our own and immediately ask whether it will destroy us.
But perhaps the more revealing question is why we assume intelligence itself leads to domination. That assumption tells us something about ourselves.
Humans have always associated intelligence with power. We build institutions around expertise. We reward strategic ability. We compete for resources. We dominate weaker organisms. We have spent much of our history converting knowledge into control.
When we imagine an intelligence more powerful than ours, perhaps we are projecting our own history onto the machine. We are imagining that it will behave as we have behaved.
That possibility should make us uncomfortable. Not because it proves machines will destroy us, but because it forces us to confront what exactly we mean by intelligence, power and responsibility.
AI is becoming a test of more than computer science. It is a test of institutions. A test of governments. A test of corporations. A test of journalism.
A test of whether democratic societies can govern technologies that evolve faster than legislation. And perhaps most of all, it is a test of whether human beings can resist the seduction of their own narratives.
We like stories with villains. We also like stories with heroes.
We love stories in which the future arrives suddenly and forces us to act. Reality is rarely so convenient.
The AI future will probably arrive incrementally. A decision here. A workplace there. A new weapon. A new surveillance capability. A new dependency on automated systems. A new concentration of computing power. A new category of work that disappears without anyone deciding, in a single moment, that it should.
There may never be a day when humanity wakes up and discovers that the machines have taken control. Control may simply be transferred piece by piece. That possibility is less cinematic. It may also be more consequential.
What should frighten us? I do not know whether AI will ever become capable of ending humanity.
Neither does anyone else. Anyone claiming certainty about a technology whose ultimate capabilities remain unknown is making a much stronger claim than the evidence permits.
But I do know that humans are already making decisions about AI that will shape the lives of people who had no part in making them.
That should concern us.
We should be asking who gets to build the systems, who gets to regulate them, who gets to audit them, who gets to benefit from them and who gets to say no.
We should be asking whether a machine should ever be allowed to make a decision simply because it can make that decision faster than a human. We should be asking what happens to human judgment when institutions begin treating machine judgment as inherently superior.
And we should be asking what happens to democracy when the systems through which people work, communicate, consume information and make decisions are controlled by a small number of private companies.
These questions do not require a killer robot. They require only the world we already have. Perhaps that is why they are harder to confront.
The apocalypse gives us an enemy. The real AI problem may give us a mirror.
And a mirror offers no one to defeat.
