Dutch airline KLM has cancelled flights to and from Uganda, as international travel restrictions linked to the Ebola outbreak in Central Africa begin to affect airline operations and crew movement.

The suspension impacts flights serving Entebbe International Airport near the Ugandan capital Kampala.
The airline said several countries had introduced entry and travel measures for people who recently passed through Uganda, even though Entebbe is not currently classified as an active Ebola risk zone. According to KLM, those restrictions now also apply to flight crews, making it difficult to continue operating the route under existing schedules.
The cancellations currently affect flights scheduled for May 30 and June 1, with the airline informing affected passengers that rebooking and refund options would be available. KLM said it is continuing to monitor developments before deciding on further operations.
The move comes as governments and health authorities intensify measures aimed at preventing the spread of Ebola beyond affected regions. Several countries have introduced temporary travel restrictions, enhanced health screenings, quarantine requirements, and entry controls targeting travellers from Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and neighbouring areas.
The outbreak has already begun affecting regional transport networks. Uganda recently suspended flights to parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, while additional cross-border restrictions have been introduced across East and Central Africa as authorities attempt to contain the virus.
The growing travel restrictions have raised concerns within the aviation sector, particularly for airlines operating routes connected to affected regions. Carriers face increasing operational challenges as governments impose varying health requirements on passengers and crew members.
Uganda remains a key aviation hub in East Africa, serving both business and tourism traffic. Any prolonged disruption to international flights could affect travel, trade, and tourism flows across the region.
KLM has stated that it is reviewing the situation continuously and will provide updates depending on public health developments and international travel regulations. For now, the airline’s decision highlights the wider economic and transport impact that disease outbreaks can have beyond the immediate health sector.
