The Caribbean nation has struggled with escalating gang violence, political instability and economic decline in recent years, leaving humanitarian agencies warning that without urgent support, Haiti’s crisis could deepen further

Haiti is facing a deepening humanitarian crisis as armed groups control large parts of the capital, Port-au-Prince, displacing more than 1.4 million people and restricting access to essential services including food, healthcare, water and education, the United Nations said.
Roughly half of the population is experiencing food insecurity, with child malnutrition rising sharply. Insecurity and blocked transport routes have hampered relief operations, leaving millions without life-saving assistance in a country of about 11.4 million people.
The UN estimates that six million Haitians will require humanitarian aid in 2026 and is seeking $880 million under its Humanitarian Response Plan to support 4.2 million of the most vulnerable with emergency food, shelter, protection, health and education services. Without additional funding, critical programs such as child nutrition and protection services for women and girls risk being scaled back.
Violence has forced around 12 percent of the population from their homes, while gang-controlled areas have complicated aid delivery and pushed agencies to rely on alternative methods such as transporting supplies by boat. Haiti remains one of the least funded crises globally, with about 24 percent of its 2025 appeal met and the 2026 plan so far receiving less than four percent of the required funds.
The funding shortfall threatens not only immediate relief efforts but also broader regional stability, as prolonged violence and displacement could drive irregular migration and strain neighboring countries. The UN has urged governments and partners to increase financial support and improve humanitarian access, warning that conditions are likely to worsen without swift action.
