Botswana’s BSB Targets Top Bank Status with Digital Drive

The Botswana Savings Bank is accelerating its technology-led transformation as it seeks to become Botswana’s primary banking institution, investing in digital platforms, self-service solutions, payment systems and agency networks to meet changing customer expectations. The state-owned lender says more customers are moving away from traditional branch-based banking and adopting mobile applications, internet banking, USSD services and electronic payment channels, prompting banks to rethink how they deliver financial services. The expansion comes as competition intensifies across Botswana’s banking sector, with lenders increasingly using technology to improve convenience, widen access and support financial inclusion, particularly among communities with limited access to physical banking infrastructure.

The lender says changing customer preferences are driving a shift away from traditional branch-based banking towards faster and more accessible digital platforms.

BSB customers can now conduct routine transactions through its mobile application, internet banking platform, USSD services, agency banking network and merchant payment solutions, including balance enquiries, fund transfers, airtime purchases, utility payments and subscription services.

The digital push forms part of the bank’s strategy to become what it calls “Botswana’s Primary Bank” — an institution customers rely on for their everyday financial needs.

BSB acting Chief Executive Officer Dr Wabo Moswate says banks must adapt as customers increasingly demand convenience and accessibility.

“The future of banking will be defined by accessibility, simplicity and relevance. Customers increasingly expect banking services to be available wherever they are and whenever they need them,” Moswate said.

He said the bank’s transformation strategy was focused not only on digitising existing services but also on redesigning the overall banking experience for individuals, businesses and communities.

Digital banking has become a key area of competition among financial institutions globally, with banks investing in technology to improve service delivery, reduce costs and expand access to customers without easy access to physical branches.

BSB says its digital ecosystem and agency banking model are helping reduce reliance on branch transactions while extending financial services to underserved communities.

The bank plans to deploy 20 additional automated teller machines (ATMs) across strategic locations in Botswana as part of efforts to expand access to cash and self-service banking facilities.

It is also developing digitally enabled branch formats designed to complement its existing network and provide customers with faster service and more flexible ways to interact with the bank.

BSB says it is strengthening its merchant acquiring and card acceptance capabilities to support businesses and encourage wider adoption of electronic payments in Botswana’s economy.

Financial inclusion remains central to the bank’s strategy, with BSB saying its national mandate includes expanding access to formal financial services and supporting economic participation.

“Becoming Botswana’s primary bank requires more than growing our customer base. It requires us to continually improve how customers experience banking,” Moswate said.

He added that the bank’s long-term goal was to build a modern financial institution that supports economic participation, promotes financial inclusion and contributes to Botswana’s development agenda.

BSB’s investments come as digital transformation reshapes banking across Africa, where lenders are increasingly using mobile platforms and alternative distribution channels to reach customers beyond traditional branch networks.
