Agreement signed between Equatorial Guinea and Gabon on Telecommunications and digital connectivity
On Monday, November 10th, the City of La Paz (Djibloho) was the setting for the signing of an agreement between Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, in order to strengthen cooperation in the telecommunications and digital connectivity sector, marking a decisive step towards the technological and economic integration of CEMAC.
The Equatoguinean side was represented by the Minister of Transport, Telecommunications and Digital Intelligence System, Honorato Evita Oma, and the Gabonese Minister of Digital Intelligence, Mark Alexander Doumba, accompanied by high-level technical delegations from both countries.
The cooperation resulted in three fundamental milestones:
- The “Zero Roaming” project (CEMAC Zero Roaming) will allow citizens of both countries to communicate without additional costs, eliminating barriers and strengthening the digital union.
- Resolution of cross-border interference: Joint work between ORTEL, ARCEP and national operators has completely resolved interference in Mongomo, and will continue soon in Ebebeyin, Acurenam, Cogo, Corisco and Rio Campo, improving the quality of telecommunications throughout the common border.
- Launch of the CAB-4 fiber optic interconnection: a high-capacity link connecting both countries and forming part of the CEMAC subregional fiber optic ring, strengthening digital infrastructure and network security.
During his speech, Minister Honorato Evita Oma invited his Gabonese counterpart to work in solidarity and coordination in order to realize the vision of Their Excellences Obiang Nguema Mbasogo and Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, in the field of telecommunications and African technological integration.
Both ministers agreed that these agreements promote digital sovereignty, technological innovation and African integration, in line with the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
Direct benefits include reduced communication costs, expansion of e-commerce, cross-border digital education, and increased security in border areas.
Equatorial Guinea is working intensively to achieve technological modernization that reaches even the most remote areas of its territory, while ensuring full connectivity with the other CEMAC countries, within the framework of its commitment to digital development and subregional integration.
