Universal Music Group and TikTok have renewed their licensing agreement with a stronger focus on removing unauthorised AI generated music from the platform.

The companies said they will work together to detect and take down AI generated songs that imitate artists or use copyrighted material without permission. The agreement also includes measures aimed at improving attribution and compensation for artists and songwriters.
The renewed partnership marks a significant shift from the tensions between both companies in 2024, when Universal Music temporarily pulled its catalogue from TikTok during a dispute over licensing terms, artist compensation and AI related copyright concerns.
Universal Music has been one of the strongest voices pushing technology platforms and AI companies to implement stricter safeguards around copyrighted music and artist rights as generative AI tools become more widespread.
The agreement reflects growing pressure across the music industry to control the rise of AI generated songs that mimic real artists without authorization. Major labels increasingly see AI voice cloning and synthetic music as both a commercial opportunity and a copyright threat.
The deal also comes days after Universal Music reached a separate agreement with Spotify allowing licensed AI generated remixes and covers under controlled conditions that include artist consent and revenue sharing.
TikTok remains one of the world’s most influential platforms for music discovery and viral song promotion, making licensing relationships with major record labels critical to its business.
