Singapore’s manufacturing output rose 6.8% in July from a year earlier, driven by strong demand for artificial intelligence-related equipment, though growth slowed from the previous month, data showed on Wednesday.
The increase, reported by the Singapore Economic Development Board, followed a revised 7.5% year-on-year rise in June and was slightly above economists’ expectations for a 6.7% increase.
Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output rose 8.0% from a year earlier.
Most manufacturing clusters recorded annual growth in July, led by precision engineering, where output jumped 17.7% on continued demand for AI-related systems.
The increase in precision engineering was supported by higher production of chips and semiconductor components, optical instruments, electronic connectors and precision metal components.
Electronics manufacturing rose 11.2%, helped by increased production in the infocommunications and consumer electronics segments.
Transport engineering output increased 10.8%, supported by higher production of land transport and aerospace equipment.
Biomedical manufacturing output fell 5.3%, weighed down by weaker export orders for medical devices and changes in the mix of active pharmaceutical ingredients being produced.
Chemical manufacturing output declined 10.6%, hurt by weaker demand for petroleum and petrochemical products, factory maintenance and disruptions to feedstock supplies.
The data comes as global demand for AI infrastructure supports semiconductor and electronics manufacturing, with investment in data centres and related technologies boosting orders for chips, equipment and precision components.
Singapore is a major hub for semiconductor manufacturing and related industries, making the sector particularly sensitive to changes in global technology demand.
