Nepal’s Flood Disaster Has Killed 1,400, With 5,800 Missing 

The death toll from devastating floods and mudslides along the Nepal-China border has risen to more than 1,400, with thousands of people still missing, according to authorities, as rescue and relief operations continue.

Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said 1,357 bodies had been recovered from flood-hit districts, while 5,326 people remained missing, including 587 foreigners.

More than 13,500 people have been rescued so far, the authority said, with operations expected to continue into the weekend.

Across the border in China’s southwestern Xizang Autonomous Region, also known as Tibet, mudslides have killed 43 people and left another 519 missing, according to Chinese authorities.

The disaster has affected communities on both sides of the mountainous border, leaving thousands unaccounted for and prompting a major emergency response.

Official figures from Nepal and China put the number of foreigners still missing across the two countries at 848.

China has sent a fourth batch of emergency relief supplies to Nepal as authorities struggle to respond to the scale of the disaster.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Beijing would continue supporting Nepal.

“China will continue to stand firmly with Nepal to overcome the difficulties together,” Mao told reporters in Beijing.

The floods and mudslides have caused extensive damage in affected areas, while rescue teams continue to search for survivors and authorities assess the destruction.
