India Gradually Becoming Major Hub for Apple’s iPhone Manufacturing

Apple is expanding its manufacturing footprint in India, with the country now producing roughly one in every four iPhones globally, according to a report by Bloomberg.

India Gradually Becoming Major Hub for Apple’s iPhone Manufacturing

The milestone reflects Apple’s broader strategy to diversify its supply chain as geopolitical tensions, trade uncertainty and tariff pressures continue to complicate operations in China, long the company’s primary manufacturing hub.

According to the report, Apple produced around 55 million iPhones in India last year, accounting for about 25% of its total global output of roughly 220 million to 230 million devices.

The production surge marks a significant shift in Apple’s manufacturing strategy. For years, the bulk of iPhone assembly took place in China, which still produces the majority of the devices thanks to its extensive electronics supply chain and well-established manufacturing infrastructure. However, Apple has been steadily increasing production in India as part of a long-term effort to reduce its reliance on a single country.

India’s rise as a manufacturing hub for Apple has been driven by several factors, including government incentives aimed at boosting domestic electronics production. New Delhi’s production-linked incentive program has encouraged global technology companies and suppliers to expand manufacturing capacity within the country.

Major Apple suppliers such as Foxconn, Tata Electronics and Pegatron have played a central role in scaling up iPhone assembly in India, operating factories that now produce a growing share of the company’s devices.

The country is not only becoming an important production base but also an increasingly significant consumer market for Apple. The company shipped around 14 million iPhones in India last year, representing a 9% increase compared with the previous year.

Apple’s expanding presence in India is also visible in its retail strategy. The company opened its sixth Apple Store in the country recently and is reportedly exploring plans to introduce Apple Pay to the market as it deepens its engagement with local consumers.

Manufacturing developments have also kept pace with product launches. Apple began assembling the entire iPhone 17 lineup in India ahead of the model’s debut last year, signaling increasing confidence in the country’s production ecosystem.

The shift is likely to continue in the coming years. Apple has been exploring plans to source a majority of iPhones sold in the United States from India by the end of the decade as it further restructures its global supply chain.

For India, the development underscores its growing role in global electronics manufacturing, while for Apple it represents a strategic hedge against geopolitical risk and supply chain disruptions in an increasingly uncertain global economy.
