ChatGPT Overtakes Facebook to Become Google’s Second Most Searched Query

For years, the world’s most popular Google searches have changed very little. YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Amazon have consistently dominated the rankings, reflecting Google’s role less as a tool for discovering information than as the internet’s primary gateway to websites people already know.

ChatGPT Overtakes Facebook to Become Google's Second Most Searched Query

That pattern is now beginning to shift.

According to the latest Semrush search estimates, YouTube remains Google’s most searched query worldwide, generating an estimated 1.38 billion searches each month. But the most significant change is the rise of ChatGPT, which now attracts 1.12 billion monthly Google searches, overtaking Facebook to become the world’s second most searched query. Facebook ranks third with 618 million monthly searches, followed by Instagram and Weather at 506 million each, while Amazon records 414 million monthly searches.

The rankings suggest that artificial intelligence has become one of the fastest growing categories in consumer internet behavior. Unlike social networks or ecommerce platforms that have accumulated users over decades, ChatGPT has reached the upper tier of global search traffic within just a few years of its public launch in late 2022.

The change is striking because the top of Google’s rankings has historically been remarkably stable. Semrush data from January and May 2026 showed YouTube retaining the top position while ChatGPT steadily narrowed the gap with Facebook. By July, ChatGPT had clearly moved into second place, marking one of the most significant shifts among Google’s highest volume search terms in recent years.

Despite the emergence of AI, the broader rankings remain dominated by navigational searches, queries users enter simply to reach a destination rather than seek information. Five of the six most searched terms are brands or online services: YouTube, ChatGPT, Facebook, Instagram and Amazon. Weather is the only non brand query among the leading searches, underscoring Google’s enduring importance for routine daily information.

The findings reinforce a long observed trend in search behavior. Even though modern browsers allow users to type website addresses directly into the address bar, many continue to begin their online sessions with Google. Search has become the default interface for navigating the web itself.

ChatGPT’s ascent also reflects the rapid mainstream adoption of generative AI. What began as an experimental chatbot has evolved into a widely used platform for writing, coding, research, education and business productivity. The volume of Google searches suggests that millions of users continue to discover or revisit the service through search rather than direct navigation.

The broader implication extends beyond one company’s popularity. AI services are beginning to occupy the same category of habitual internet destinations as YouTube, Facebook and Amazon, suggesting they are becoming foundational consumer platforms rather than niche productivity tools.

Semrush bases its rankings on estimated average monthly search volume across a database of more than 28 billion keywords, using a rolling 12 month average rather than searches recorded during a single month. While the exact volumes fluctuate as the database is updated, the latest rankings point to a structural change in how people use Google: not simply to find information, but increasingly to access AI alongside the web’s largest digital platforms.
