Apple may unveil its first foldable iPhone in September, but India could be among the markets left waiting for the device as supply, pricing and testing challenges limit its availability at launch, according to a report citing a Chinese component supplier.

The foldable iPhone, widely expected to be called the iPhone Ultra, could be unveiled alongside Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro lineup, but may initially be sold only in the United States, ChannelNews Australia reported, citing a Chinese supplier familiar with Apple’s production.
The supplier said the launch constraints were “primarily down to supply and pricing issues” and claimed Apple was also encountering testing problems with some production models, according to the report.
Apple has not confirmed the existence of a foldable iPhone, its name, specifications, launch date or the markets where it would be sold.
For India, the reported launch strategy could be significant. Apple has been expanding its manufacturing footprint in the country and increasing its retail presence, making India an increasingly important market for the company. But the latest report suggests Indian consumers may not be able to buy Apple’s first foldable iPhone when it is initially launched.
China could also face a delayed launch, with the report saying Apple may consider the market after the United States. It did not provide a timetable for availability in either India or China.
Apple’s foldable gamble
Apple has so far stayed out of the foldable smartphone market even as rivals including Samsung and Chinese smartphone makers have released multiple generations of foldable devices.
A foldable iPhone would mark a significant expansion of Apple’s flagship smartphone range and could give the company a new way to differentiate its most important hardware product.
But launching a foldable device at Apple’s scale presents challenges that are different from those of conventional iPhones. Foldable displays, hinges and other components are more complex and expensive to manufacture, while Apple would need to meet its durability and quality standards before shipping the device to customers.
The reported supply constraints could therefore limit the number of units Apple is able to produce initially, while higher component costs could push the device’s price well above that of its conventional iPhones.
Details about the alleged device remain unconfirmed. Luxury customization company Caviar has published renders and claimed specifications that include a 5.3-inch outer display and a 7.8-inch internal screen, with both displays using LTPO OLED technology and supporting refresh rates of up to 120Hz.
Caviar has also claimed the device would use a titanium frame and a new hinge and flexible glass designed to reduce the visibility of the crease when the phone is unfolded.
The alleged device is said to use an A20 Pro chip, 12GB of RAM and a 5,800 mAh battery. Its reported camera system includes two 48-megapixel rear cameras and a 24-megapixel camera beneath the internal display.
Apple has not confirmed any of those specifications. The latest report places Apple’s foldable announcement on Sept. 8, although other reports have suggested Sept. 9. Apple has not yet announced the date of its autumn iPhone event.
Even if Apple unveils the device in September, the report suggests that announcement and commercial availability may not happen simultaneously across markets.
That could leave U.S. consumers among the first to buy Apple’s long-awaited foldable iPhone, while customers in India and other major markets wait for production to scale up.
For India, the delay would come as Apple continues to deepen its presence in the country. India has become an increasingly important manufacturing base for the company, while Apple’s retail expansion has helped strengthen its position in the world’s second-largest smartphone market.
But the reported supply and pricing constraints illustrate the challenge of introducing a new iPhone category while maintaining Apple’s global launch model.
For now, however, there is no official confirmation that India will miss the initial launch. Apple’s next iPhone event and subsequent announcements about pricing and availability are expected to provide the first clear indication of whether Indian customers will have to wait.
