AI Shopping Revolution Speeds up As Alibaba Turns Taobao Into Chatbot Marketplace

Alibaba Group is pushing deeper into the AI commerce race with plans to transform online shopping from a keyword driven experience into a chatbot style conversation, powered by its Qwen AI platform.

AI Shopping Revolution Speeds up As Alibaba Turns Taobao Into Chatbot Marketplace

The Chinese technology giant is integrating its flagship AI assistant, Qwen, into its massive e commerce platforms Taobao and Tmall, allowing users to search for, compare and purchase products using natural language conversations instead of traditional search bars.

The move reflects a growing shift in global online retail where AI assistants are increasingly becoming the gateway to digital commerce. Rather than typing product keywords and manually scrolling through listings, shoppers will be able to ask conversational questions such as requesting a lightweight laptop under a certain budget or comparing fashion items for specific occasions.

According to the South China Morning Post, the Qwen app will gain access to more than four billion products listed across Taobao and Tmall. The AI assistant will also handle functions beyond discovery, including logistics support and post purchase services through Alibaba’s expanding ecosystem.

Inside Taobao itself, Alibaba is launching a dedicated Qwen powered shopping assistant equipped with tools such as virtual try ons and 30 day price tracking. The system is designed to personalize recommendations using user preferences, shopping history and interaction patterns.

The strategy highlights how aggressively Chinese technology firms are embedding AI directly into consumer transactions. Analysts say the industry is rapidly moving away from traditional search based e commerce toward what is increasingly being called conversational or agentic commerce, where AI systems act more like shopping assistants than search engines.

Alibaba’s latest push also underscores intensifying competition in China’s AI sector. The company has been accelerating efforts to integrate Qwen across its wider ecosystem, including food delivery, travel booking and digital payments. The goal is to make Qwen a central entry point for daily digital services rather than simply a standalone chatbot.

The stakes are enormous. Taobao alone reportedly has more than 950 million monthly active users, giving Alibaba one of the largest testing grounds in the world for AI powered shopping.

Industry researchers believe conversational commerce could fundamentally reshape how consumers interact with online marketplaces. Instead of forcing users to simplify searches into short keywords, AI assistants can interpret detailed requests and refine recommendations dynamically through ongoing dialogue.

For Alibaba, the transition represents more than a product update. It is part of a broader battle to dominate the next phase of internet interaction where AI assistants increasingly replace traditional apps, menus and search interfaces as the primary gateway to digital services.
