AI Server Exports to China Land 9 People in Taiwan Court

Taiwan prosecutors today indicted nine people, including employees of Nvidia and Super Micro, over allegations they illegally exported artificial intelligence servers to China.

Taiwan, the world’s largest producer of advanced chips used in AI applications, has been investigating suspected illegal exports of servers equipped with Nvidia chips that are subject to U.S. export controls.

Washington has imposed restrictions since 2022 that prohibit the export or sale of certain advanced semiconductors to China.

In a statement, prosecutors in the northern port city of Keelung said the defendants, whose full names were not disclosed, were “fully aware” that Nvidia and Super Micro have “rigorous internal control procedures” regarding exports.

The defendants “colluded with one another at various levels for enormous profit, illegally exporting high-end servers, increasing corporate compliance costs, and severely damaging our ⁠nation’s international image”, prosecutors said.

Taiwan has tightened export controls in recent years to prevent advanced technology and know-how from reaching China, which claims the democratically governed island as its own territory despite strong objections from Taiwan’s government.
