Zimbabwe Gold Miner Cuts Grid Reliance With Solar

Zimbabwe’s largest gold producer, Dallaglio Investments, has commissioned solar photovoltaic plants at two of its key mines as miners increasingly invest in renewable energy to reduce reliance on the country’s unreliable electricity grid.

The company said the new solar facilities have been completed at its Eureka and Pickstone-Peerless gold mines, helping to lower diesel consumption and improve energy security for mining operations.

Zimbabwe’s mining sector has increasingly turned to captive power generation as frequent electricity shortages and load shedding disrupt production. Gold, the country’s biggest export earner, generated $4.61 billion in export revenue in 2025, nearly half of Zimbabwe’s total exports, according to government data.

Dallaglio, which is owned by Padenga Holdings, is Zimbabwe’s largest private-sector gold producer. The company has expanded output in recent years as the government targets annual gold production of 50 metric tons in 2026, up from a record 46.7 tons last year.

The solar projects are expected to significantly reduce the mines’ dependence on grid electricity and diesel generators while lowering operating costs and carbon emissions.

The investment comes as mining companies across Zimbabwe accelerate spending on self-generated power, including solar plants, to support expansion projects amid growing electricity demand. Mining executives have warned that power shortages remain one of the biggest constraints to production growth as new mines and processing facilities come online.
