UNDP supports Türkiye in strengthening its long-term climate strategies

Training sessions bringing together 590 participants from various sectors have helped raise awareness of Türkiye’s fight against climate change and strengthen collaboration among stakeholders

Press Release – May 5, 2025 – Achieving long-term climate goals is only possible through holistic, inclusive, and knowledge -based policy processes. With this understanding, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) organized a comprehensive series of capacity-building trainings under the Capacity Building on Long-Term Climate Change Strategy in Türkiye Project, which is carried out in collaboration with the Directorate of Climate Change under the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change. These efforts aimed to enhance the capacities of decision-makers and implementers.

The main objective of the trainings was to support long-term planning processes in combating climate change, promote the determination of national and international strategies aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and ensure the effective involvement of all relevant stakeholders.

Held throughout March 2025, the sessions brought together approximately 590 participants, including experts from sectors such as environment, energy, agriculture, and industry, as well as representatives from public institutions, local governments, academia, research organizations, and civil society.

The first session of the training series was held in Konya on 10 March, focusing on “Climate Change and Agriculture.” Representatives from the Directorate of Climate Change, provincial directorates, Konya Metropolitan Municipality, academia, and the chamber of agriculture exchanged views on good practices, regional assessments, and solution proposals.

On 12-13 March, an online training on “Climate Change and Vulnerabilities” addressed the societal impacts of climate change, national and international legal frameworks, the importance of just transition, inclusiveness, and participation.

The “Climate Action and Energy Systems in Urban Areas” training, held in Gaziantep on 21 March, highlighted critical issues such as urban climate policies, transition to renewable energy, energy efficiency, nearly zero-energy buildings, and green certification systems. It also covered sustainable transportation models and low-carbon transport strategies.

Under the title “Long-Term Climate Change Strategy Trainings,” three more sessions were conducted — in-person in Ankara and Kocaeli on 20 and 26 March, and online on 25 March. These sessions focused on international climate policies, Türkiye’s net-zero target, carbon markets, green transformation, local action plans, and sector-specific strategies.

Additionally, as part of the training program, two sessions on Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification were organized for the personnel of the Directorate of Climate Change on 18 and 27 March. On 28 March, an online training on the Climate Portal Additional Module was provided for representatives of the Department of Greenhouse Gas Reduction Policies.

Complementing the training series, a workshop was held in Ankara on 19 March, with the participation of Fatma Varank, Deputy Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and Halil Hasar, Director of Climate Change Presidency, to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of Türkiye’s long-term climate strategies.

Implemented under the LTS Project, this training series has provided a significant boost to Türkiye’s climate action efforts, contributing to raising awareness, supporting policy development, and enhancing stakeholder engagement. The sessions also helped foster a strong communication network and new collaborations across sectors.

These trainings form an essential part of the awareness-raising and capacity-building efforts carried out under the LTS Project. The project, which has been carried out since December 2023, aims to strengthen Türkiye’s long-term vision in its fight against climate change, promote evidence-based policymaking, and enhance effective collaboration among diverse stakeholders.
