Trump Will Now Order the Release of Government UFO and Extraterrestrial Files

For decades, speculation about alien life has lingered at the edges of American politics, resurfacing in moments of cultural anxiety and technological change. The subject is once again moving from late-night talk and internet forums into official channels of government. Whether the newly released documents yield startling revelations or little more than familiar ambiguities, the episode underscores the enduring grip of the unknown on the public imagination and the political utility of promising transparency about it.

Trump Will Now Order the Release of Government UFOand Extraterrestrial Files

President Donald Trump says he has directed the Pentagon and other federal agencies to identify and release files related to extraterrestrials and unidentified flying objects, citing what he called “tremendous interest” in the subject.

The announcement, made in a post on his social media platform, came hours after Mr. Trump accused former President Barack Obama of disclosing “classified information” when Mr. Obama suggested in a recent podcast interview that aliens were real.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Mr. Trump said, “I don’t know if they’re real or not,” and added of Mr. Obama, “I may get him out of trouble by declassifying.”

In his social media post, Mr. Trump said he was directing government agencies to release files related “to alien and extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), and unidentified flying objects (UFOs), and any and all other information connected to these highly complex, but extremely interesting and important, matters.”

Mr. Obama, who made his comments during a podcast appearance over the weekend, later clarified that he had not seen evidence that aliens “have made contact with us,” but said, “statistically, the universe is so vast that the odds are good there’s life out there.”

Asked about the prospect of extraterrestrial visitors, Mr. Trump told reporters, “I don’t have an opinion on it. I never talk about it. A lot of people do. A lot of people believe it.”

Lara Trump, the president’s daughter-in-law, said this week on a podcast that Mr. Trump had prepared a speech on aliens that he would deliver at the “right time.” The suggestion appeared to catch the White House off guard. On Wednesday, the press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, laughed when asked about the claim and said, “A speech on aliens would be news to me.”

Public fascination with unidentified flying objects surged in 2017 after former Pentagon and government officials provided Navy videos of unknown aerial objects to The New York Times and Politico. The renewed attention led Congress to hold its first hearings on UFOs in 50 years in May 2022. Defense officials said at the time that the objects, which appeared as green triangles hovering above a Navy ship, were likely drones.

The Pentagon has since pledged greater transparency. In July 2022, it established the All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office, known as AARO, to serve as a central repository for military reports of unidentified aerial phenomena, replacing an earlier task force.

In 2023, Dr. Sean Kirkpatrick, then the head of the office, told reporters that he had seen no evidence “of any program having ever existed as a to do any sort of reverse engineering of any sort of extraterrestrial (unidentified aerial phenomena).”

An unclassified report submitted to Congress in June 2024 said that service members had made 485 reports of unidentified phenomena over the previous year. Of those, 118 were determined to be “prosaic objects such as various types of balloons, birds, and unmanned aerial systems.”

“It is important to underscore that, to date, AARO has discovered no evidence of extraterrestrial beings, activity, or technology,” the report said.

While the newly released material may draw renewed scrutiny, officials have repeatedly said that most cases remain unexplained not because they are extraordinary, but because there is insufficient data to reach firm conclusions.
