Spotify has introduced an AI-powered Running Mode designed to automatically tailor music to a user’s workout, marking the streaming company’s latest push into fitness and personalised listening experiences.

The new feature generates playlists based on different phases of a run, including warm-up, steady pace, high-intensity intervals and recovery. It also matches songs to a runner’s tempo while factoring in personal listening preferences.
Users can choose from 25 workout presets, customise session duration, set target beats per minute and select preferred music genres. The feature also delivers spoken audio cues to signal pace changes during workouts. At launch, the voice guidance is available only in English.
Spotify said the feature builds on its AI-powered playlist technology introduced over the past year, after data showed many users were already using the platform to create workout playlists and fitness-focused listening sessions.
Running Mode is currently available to Premium subscribers on iOS in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Sweden. Spotify did not say when the feature would expand to Android devices or additional markets.
The launch follows Spotify’s broader expansion into fitness. In April, the company introduced a dedicated Fitness Hub that combines music, podcasts and guided workouts through a partnership with Peloton, giving Premium users access to more than 1,400 fitness classes within the app.
The latest update also comes weeks after Spotify unveiled an AI-powered music assistant that allows Premium subscribers to interact with the app using natural language to discover music, podcasts and audiobooks. Together, the new features reflect Spotify’s strategy of using artificial intelligence to deepen user engagement and expand beyond traditional music streaming.
Spotify is facing growing competition from rivals including Apple Music, YouTube Music and Amazon Music, while also competing with dedicated fitness platforms seeking to combine exercise tracking with personalised audio experiences. By integrating workout tools directly into its app, Spotify is aiming to keep users within its ecosystem for both entertainment and fitness.
