Spotify Gives Users More Control Over Recommendations

Spotify is rolling out a new AI-powered feature that gives Premium subscribers greater control over how the platform understands their listening habits and the recommendations it delivers.

Spotify Gives Users more Control over Recommendations

The feature, called Taste Profile, began rolling out Wednesday to Premium users aged 18 and older in the U.S., Spotify’s largest market by traffic and revenue. It follows an initial beta launch in New Zealand earlier this year.

Taste Profile allows users to see Spotify’s interpretation of their interests across music, podcasts and audiobooks. They can then use natural-language instructions to tell Spotify what they want more or less of, allowing the recommendation system to adjust their Home feed.

Users could, for example, ask Spotify to introduce them to a new genre or musical era, increase recommendations with a particular mood or reduce content that no longer reflects their interests. They can also provide guidance on the types of podcasts and audiobooks they want to see more often.

The feature is designed to address a limitation of algorithmic recommendations, where listening activity does not always represent what a user actually considers part of their taste.

Someone may regularly play sleep sounds at night, listen to children’s music while driving with family or allow another person to use their account. Such activity can influence recommendations even when the account owner does not want that content shaping their profile.

Spotify has previously allowed users to exclude individual tracks or playlists from their Taste Profile. It also introduced a feature allowing parents to prevent children’s music from influencing their recommendations. Taste Profile expands those controls by allowing users to communicate broader preferences directly to Spotify.

The feature is powered by Spotify’s AI and forms part of the system behind several of the platform’s personalized experiences, including Discover Weekly, Made For You recommendations and Spotify Wrapped.

To access Taste Profile, eligible users can open the Spotify mobile app, tap their profile picture and select Taste Profile. Under “Tell us more,” they can describe the changes they want to make. Spotify says recommendations typically adjust within a few hours, although the company notes that the feature remains in beta.

Spotify first announced the Taste Profile in March at the SXSW conference, describing it as a way for listeners to review and edit the algorithmic profile used to understand their preferences.

The U.S. rollout gives Spotify the opportunity to test the feature across a much larger audience while giving users a more direct role in shaping an algorithm that has traditionally operated largely behind the scenes.

The company has not provided a timeline for when Taste Profile will expand beyond the U.S. and New Zealand.
