Samsung Electronics and five affiliates will invest a combined $1 billion in Helix Digital Infrastructure, an artificial intelligence infrastructure company launched by global investment firm KKR and backed by Nvidia, as demand for AI data centres and power infrastructure grows.
Samsung Electronics said on Tuesday it would invest $500 million, while Samsung C&T, Samsung SDS, Samsung SDI, Samsung Life Insurance and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance would contribute the remainder.
The investment comes as Helix targets the growing demand for infrastructure supporting artificial intelligence, including hyperscale data centres and the power generation and networks needed to operate them.
The deal will also allow Samsung to draw on capabilities across its affiliates, spanning semiconductors and cooling systems to data centre construction and batteries, as the South Korean group seeks to expand its role in the global AI infrastructure buildout.
Shares of Samsung Electronics rose 2.13% on Tuesday morning, while South Korea’s benchmark Kospi index fell 0.53%.
Helix, launched in June, focuses on infrastructure supporting AI demand, including hyperscale data centres, power generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure and fibre-optic networks.
The company is led by Adam Selipsky, the former CEO of Amazon Web Services. KKR, Kuwait Investment Authority, Nvidia and U.S. power company Vistra are founding investors in Helix.
The latest investment is in addition to more than $10 billion in funds already committed to the company, according to KKR.
Samsung said the investment would help accelerate the global rollout of AI data centres alongside Helix and deepen collaboration among the participating companies.
KKR has invested more than $75 billion globally across digital infrastructure and power, including about $9 billion in South Korea since 2009.
