OpenAI has begun rolling out GPT-5.5 Instant, a new foundation model that now serves as the default experience for ChatGPT users. The new model replaces GPT-5.3 Instant in a move aimed at improving accuracy, speed, and personalisation across the platform.

The update, released on Tuesday, is positioned as part of OpenAI’s push to make ChatGPT more reliable for everyday use while maintaining the fast response times users expect from the “Instant” tier. The company says the model delivers clearer and more concise answers, with fewer errors in complex or sensitive topics such as law, medicine, and finance.
According to OpenAI, GPT-5.5 Instant improves factual accuracy and reduces hallucinations compared to previous versions. Internal evaluations show stronger performance across reasoning and knowledge tasks, including better results on advanced academic benchmarks and multimodal understanding tests.
The upgrade also introduces more advanced context handling. ChatGPT can now make better use of information from past conversations, uploaded files, and connected services when available. This allows responses to be more tailored to individual users without requiring them to repeat information across chats.
OpenAI has also expanded transparency around how the model generates responses. Users will now be able to see which memory sources or stored context influenced an answer, with options to edit or delete that information. The company says this is intended to give users more control over personalization features as they scale.
GPT-5.5 Instant also improves how ChatGPT decides when to use tools such as web search, helping it switch more effectively between internal knowledge and real-time information retrieval. OpenAI says this makes the system more useful for research-style queries and up-to-date information needs.
The model is being rolled out across ChatGPT’s web platform first, with mobile and broader access expected in the coming weeks. While all users will receive the upgrade, some personalization features will initially be limited to paid subscribers before expanding to free tiers.
Developers will also gain access to GPT-5.5 through the API under a new “chat-latest” label, while GPT-5.3 will remain available for a limited transition period.
The release follows growing attention on how AI models balance speed, accuracy, and user memory. Earlier versions of ChatGPT faced criticism from users who felt strongly attached to specific model behaviours, prompting OpenAI to refine how personality and consistency are handled across updates.
With GPT-5.5 Instant now set as the default, OpenAI is signalling a shift toward a more unified system designed for everyday use, where reliability and context awareness take priority over experimental variability.
