Meta Platforms has hired MongoDB CEO CJ Desai to lead a new enterprise business unit, sending shares of the database software company sharply lower on Monday.
Desai will join Meta as chief enterprise platform officer and report directly to CEO Mark Zuckerberg, according to a company release.
Desai, who has been MongoDB’s CEO for less than a year, will lead Meta Enterprise Platform, a new unit focused on providing businesses with AI and other technology tools.
The unit will initially focus on a suite of products including Meta’s Muse AI agent, a business agent and a coding tool.
Meta plans to use “strengths that few other companies have: advanced models, leading agents, large-scale infrastructure, and years of working closely with many businesses,” Zuckerberg wrote in a release.
MongoDB shares fell about 25% following the announcement, while Meta shares declined about 4%.
MongoDB’s board appointed former CEO Dev Ittycheria as interim president and CEO. Desai succeeded Ittycheria as MongoDB CEO in November 2025 after Ittycheria had led the company for 11 years.
Before joining MongoDB, Desai served as president of product and engineering at cloud services company Cloudflare.
His move to Meta comes as the social media company steps up its investments in artificial intelligence products and services for businesses.
Meta has been expanding its presence in AI agents with products including its Muse personal AI assistant, as the company seeks to compete with OpenAI and other AI developers.
The shift comes as technology companies face growing scrutiny over the safety of increasingly capable AI systems. Researchers and technology executives, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, have called for slower AI development amid concerns about potential risks.
