Macron Wears Aviators at Davos While Criticizing Trump’s Economic Policies

In aviators and with a wink to pop culture, Macron stood firm in Davos, signaling that Europe will not quietly yield to U.S. pressure. As tariffs loom and Greenland remains a flashpoint, the French president’s message was that determination can be both stylish and strategic.

Macron Wears Aviators at Davos While Criticizing Trump’s Economic Policies

French President Emmanuel Macron appeared in aviator sunglasses Tuesday as he addressed world leaders at the annual World Economic Forum, signaling a mix of defiance and style in the face of rising tensions with the United States.

In his speech, Macron criticized the Trump administration’s trade policies, saying the measures “openly aim to weaken and subordinate Europe.”

His remarks come amid escalating disagreements over tariffs and geopolitical ambitions that have rattled European capitals.

Last week, during a New Year’s oration to France’s military, Macron drew attention to a swollen and red eye, calling it “unsightly” but assuring the audience that it was “completely harmless.”

“Simply see an unintentional reference to the ‘Eye of the Tiger’ … For those who catch the reference, it is a sign of determination,” Macron said, evoking the 1980s American rock anthem in a nod to resolve and resilience.

Tuesday’s address highlighted Europe’s growing frustration with U.S. trade actions. Last week, the Trump administration announced a 10 percent import tax on goods from France, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands.

The tariffs, scheduled to take effect February 1, were prompted in part by opposition to Trump’s plans to acquire Greenland, a Danish territory.

Further straining relations, the White House has threatened to impose a 200 percent tariff on French wine and champagne. The proposed tariff follows reports that Macron declined an invitation to join Trump’s “Board of Peace,” an initiative the U.S. president is expected to formalize in Davos on Thursday.

On Tuesday morning, Trump posted screenshots of private messages between himself and Macron on Truth Social. In the exchanges, Macron reportedly questioned Trump’s Greenland plans and offered to host a G7 summit in Paris on Thursday as a diplomatic alternative.

The comments by both leaders underscore a delicate balancing act: Macron is asserting European economic sovereignty while seeking to maintain channels of dialogue with Washington.

The tensions mark one of the most visible tests of transatlantic relations since the imposition of Trump-era tariffs in 2018.

Macron’s sartorial choice of aviator sunglasses was widely interpreted as a symbolic gesture, projecting calm and confidence in the midst of mounting international pressure.

The World Economic Forum, which gathers political and business leaders from around the globe, has in recent years become a platform for addressing not only economic issues but also geopolitical disputes, and Tuesday’s session highlighted the fraught state of U.S.-European relations under Trump’s administration.
