UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that he will step down from office following mounting pressure from within the Labour Party, less than two years after securing a historic election victory.

Starmer’s decision comes after days of intense discussions with senior Labour figures and cabinet ministers, many of whom reportedly urged him to make way for new leadership amid growing concerns over the party’s electoral prospects.
The pressure intensified following Andy Burnham’s successful return to Westminster after defeating Reform UK in the Makerfield by-election. Burnham is now widely viewed as the frontrunner to succeed Starmer and could become Britain’s next prime minister if he secures enough support among Labour MPs.
Starmer had publicly insisted he would fight any leadership challenge, but sources suggest conversations with ministers and family members over the weekend led him to reconsider his position. Drafts of a resignation speech were reportedly prepared ahead of his announcement.
His departure follows months of declining support within Labour ranks. Critics pointed to controversial policy decisions, including cuts to winter fuel payments and welfare reforms, as well as a series of political setbacks that damaged the party’s standing in public opinion polls.
Although Starmer received praise for his handling of international affairs, including the Middle East crisis, internal dissatisfaction continued to grow after Labour suffered significant losses in local elections earlier this year.
Starmer will remain in Downing Street until a leadership contest or transition process is completed. His successor will inherit a challenging economic environment and an increasingly complex international landscape.
The resignation marks a dramatic fall for a leader who became only the fourth Labour politician to win a UK general election, delivering the party’s strongest parliamentary performance since the era of former Prime Minister Tony Blair.
