Google is testing a new Gemini feature that allows its artificial intelligence assistant to call businesses on behalf of users, expanding the company’s push to make AI agents capable of completing tasks without direct human involvement.
Called “Call for Me,” the feature will initially be available to Pixel 11 owners in the U.S. who subscribe to Gemini. Users will also need the beta version of Google’s Phone app for Android, as the feature remains an experiment.
Unlike Google’s earlier AI-assisted calling tools, Call for Me can share personal information that users approve for a particular call. This gives Gemini greater scope to complete tasks that would normally require a person to speak directly with a business.
For example, Gemini can call a store to check whether a product is in stock, make a restaurant reservation, reschedule an appointment or ask a business to place an item on hold. The AI can introduce itself, navigate automated phone menus, wait on hold and conduct the conversation with the business.
Users can follow the call through a live transcript and take over the conversation at any point. The calls are made using the user’s own phone number and are dialed directly from the device.
The feature builds on Google’s earlier efforts to automate routine phone interactions. The company previously demonstrated Google Assistant calling businesses to make appointments, while its Ask for Me feature allowed Gemini to contact businesses to obtain information about services and pricing.
Pixel users have also had access to Hold for Me, which allows Google’s AI to wait on hold until a representative answers, as well as Talk to a Live Rep and Direct My Call, which help users navigate automated phone systems.
Call for Me represents a broader shift from AI assistants that primarily provide information toward AI agents that can act on a user’s behalf. Google’s latest Pixel devices already use Gemini for tasks such as ordering groceries, booking rides and making reservations.
Google said it is starting Call for Me on a limited basis because real-world conversations can be unpredictable and require more nuance than automated systems. The company plans to use the experiment to improve the technology before considering a wider rollout.
The development comes as Google, Meta and other technology companies compete to build AI agents capable of handling everyday tasks. Rather than simply telling users how to complete an action, these systems are increasingly being designed to perform the action themselves.
For Google, automated phone calls offer another way to connect Gemini with businesses and services that may not yet have dedicated AI integrations, potentially allowing the assistant to perform tasks through the same phone channels people already use.
