Google Search recorded its highest-ever queries per second during Argentina’s dramatic FIFA World Cup comeback victory over Egypt.

Nick Fox, Google’s Senior Vice President for Knowledge and Information, said the search engine surpassed all previous usage records immediately after Argentina scored the decisive goal in its 3-2 Round of 16 victory. The company did not disclose the exact number of search queries processed per second during the surge.
The milestone came after Argentina overturned a two-goal deficit in the second half to book a place in the quarterfinals. Egypt had taken control through goals from Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico before the defending champions mounted a comeback with strikes from Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernández.
The winning goal sparked a global wave of searches as millions of fans turned to Google for live scores, match analysis, player information and reactions. According to Fox, the spike exceeded every previous traffic peak recorded by Google Search.
The latest record builds on a similar milestone achieved during the 2022 FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and France. At the time, Google Chief Executive Sundar Pichai said the company experienced its highest search traffic in 25 years as fans worldwide followed one of football’s most memorable matches.
While Google has not released comparable figures for either event, the latest announcement suggests that demand for real-time information during globally watched sporting competitions continues to grow.
The record also reflects changing consumer behaviour, with fans increasingly relying on search engines alongside live broadcasts. Modern audiences frequently search for statistics, player profiles, controversial refereeing decisions, match schedules and social media reactions while games are still in progress.
Google Trends data showed the Argentina-Egypt encounter generated the highest search interest of any Argentina match during the 2026 tournament. Interest peaked immediately after the winning goal, with searches rising sharply across multiple languages and regions.
Football has consistently ranked among the world’s biggest drivers of internet traffic, particularly during the FIFA World Cup, which attracts billions of viewers across television and digital platforms. The tournament’s combination of live drama, global audiences and constant online engagement has made it one of the internet’s largest recurring events.
For Google, the new usage record underscores the enduring importance of Search even as the company expands its artificial intelligence products. Despite growing adoption of AI-powered tools, millions of users still turn to Google Search during major global moments when they want immediate, reliable and constantly updated information.
