Google has begun rolling out a major update to its Home smart platform that brings powerful new artificial intelligence features, most notably letting the AI assistant understand and describe what’s happening in live video feeds from connected security cameras.

Previously, users could only ask about past events recorded on their Nest or Home cameras, but with the new “Live Search” feature powered by Google’s Gemini models, the assistant can now respond to real-time questions like whether a vehicle is present in the driveway or what’s occurring at the back door as it happens. This represents a significant advancement in how people can interact with their smart home systems, allowing for more immediate insights directly from their cameras, but access to this live description capability requires a subscription to the Advanced tier of Google Home Premium.
Alongside the live camera feature, Google said it has improved the underlying Gemini models that power the AI on Home devices, aiming to make responses more accurate and relevant. These updates help with general information queries and also refine music playback, responding more reliably when you ask for songs or audio content.
In addition, the system’s contextual understanding of commands has been enhanced so that instructions are applied more logically. For example, telling the system to “turn off the kitchen lights” now affects only the specified room, and a command like “turn off all the lights” applies only to the user’s current location, rather than other properties or rooms managed within the same Home ecosystem.
Google said these changes are designed to make the smart home experience smoother and more intuitive. By combining improved AI comprehension with live access to camera data, Home users can interact with their devices more naturally and get useful, timely answers about what’s happening in and around their homes. As with other recent feature expansions, detailed notes on what’s included and how each part works are available in Google’s official update documentation.
While the update brings many powerful features, there are practical considerations for users. The most advanced smart camera descriptions and searchable history are gated behind the Google Home Premium Advanced subscription, so to fully unlock the system’s potential, you’ll need to be prepared for a recurring cost.
The rollout is also gradual, meaning not all users will see every feature immediately on all devices. Additionally, because Gemini has replaced the older Assistant system on many devices, some users have reported changes in familiar behaviour or functionality compared with the previous assistant experience. Despite this, the overall direction of the update is clear: Google is moving toward making everyday smart home interactions more conversational, contextual, and intelligent through the integration of next-generation AI.
