Germany is Spending $1.9 Billion on Military Data Encryption

A key parliamentary committee is expected to approve an agreement with the company on Wednesday to modernise encryption across the Bundeswehr’s communications networks, the document showed.

Deliveries under an initial order worth just over $114 million are due to begin next year.

The broader framework agreement, which builds on an existing contract with Secunet, will run for four years. The company will develop a so-called ‘Secure Inter-Network Architecture’ (SINA) and provide planning, maintenance, training and repair services.

Shares in Secunet rose 11% at 1022 GMT following the news.

Financing has been secured through a commitment authorisation for the following year, while the defence ministry expects additional costs of about $6.8 million for use of the system through 2030.

The move comes as Germany increases defence spending and seeks to strengthen the security and resilience of military communications and digital infrastructure.
