Spain’s 0-0 draw with Cape Verde was costly, more than the two points the Spaniards left on the table in the 2026 World Cup standings.

A Polymarket bettor wagered nearly $1 million on Spain to win the Group H matchup, only to see that total wiped out by the tie with the No. 67 Tubarões Azuis on Monday.
Instead, 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha made seven official saves for a clean sheet and what can be considered a massive upset of an international soccer powerhouse.
Cape Verde goalkeeper Josimar “Vozinha” Dias also saw his Instagram following surge from just over 50,000 to more than 6 million after his standout performance against Spain at the 2026 World Cup, he produced seven saves to secure a historic 0-0 draw for the tournament debutants.
Vozinha, who plays for Portuguese second-tier club Chaves, became an overnight global sensation after frustrating one of the competition’s favourites and delivering one of the most memorable goalkeeping displays of the opening stages of the tournament.
Before kickoff in Atlanta, the veteran goalkeeper had spent nearly 14 years waiting for his World Cup moment. By the final whistle, his name had become one of the biggest talking points of the tournament, with millions of new followers flocking to his social media accounts.
The result marked a remarkable achievement for Cape Verde, a nation of around half a million people making its first World Cup appearance, as they held a Spain side featuring some of the world’s top players without a goal.
“I may be the Man of the Match, but this award is for all my teammates,” Vozinha said after receiving the player-of-the-match award. “I never thought any of this was impossible, and I’ll keep working for the sake of the dream and for the people.”
Vozinha’s defining contribution came late in the first half when he produced a spectacular double save. After Spain’s Marc Cucurella headed the ball into the path of Ferran Torres, the goalkeeper rushed out to block the shot, deflecting it onto the crossbar. Still recovering on the ground, he quickly got back into position and tipped Mikel Oyarzabal’s follow-up effort over the bar.
The performance represented the fulfilment of a long-held ambition for Vozinha, who made his professional debut relatively late and had previously considered ending his international career.
“I’m 40 years old; as everyone knows, I turned professional back in 2012,” he said. “That’s quite late for someone like me. I thought about quitting the national team, but I kept going because of this dream.”
His nickname, “Vozinha”, “granny”, originated during his childhood in Cape Verde, when older children teased him and he threatened to tell his grandparents. He later embraced the name, which is now associated with one of the World Cup’s biggest underdog stories.
Cape Verde entered the tournament with little expectation but now have a chance of reaching the knockout rounds. A victory against either Uruguay or Saudi Arabia could put them in contention for a place in the next stage.
“Everyone thought we came here just to enjoy the experience or take a vacation at the World Cup, but that’s not the case,” Vozinha said. “We are here to compete and to fight for our country.”
The goalkeeper’s heroics have turned Cape Verde’s first World Cup appearance from a celebration of participation into a campaign filled with genuine belief.
