Air Tanzania will resume flights between Dar es Salaam and Moscow on September 7, just hours after announcing a temporary suspension of the route over operating risks.
The Tanzanian national carrier said on Friday that it had reassessed the route with relevant authorities and determined that services could resume.
“The decision follows a routine risk assessment of the operating environment along the route,” Air Tanzania said in a statement, without providing details on what had prompted the reversal.
The airline had announced earlier on Friday that flights TC422 and TC423 between Dar es Salaam and Moscow would be suspended from September 4 following a risk assessment. It did not initially provide a date for resuming the service.
The brief suspension came amid heightened concerns over aviation safety in Russian airspace following increased Ukrainian drone activity and repeated disruptions at airports around Moscow.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy warned airlines and insurance companies earlier this week that Russian airspace was becoming increasingly dangerous because of the presence of Ukrainian drones. He said Ukraine was not targeting civil aviation but urged airlines to take the risks into account.
Russia has rejected the warning, with its Transport Ministry saying foreign airlines were aware of the safety measures in place at Russian airports and that the country’s air transport infrastructure continued to operate normally.
Moscow’s airports have nevertheless experienced significant disruptions in recent days because of temporary closures linked to drone attacks, according to flight-tracking data cited by Reuters.
Air Tanzania’s decision to resume the route followed another assessment of the operating environment. The airline has reopened bookings for the service.
Passengers whose flights were affected by the temporary suspension and who received refunds can rebook on alternative flights without paying additional charges, according to the airline.
Air Tanzania launched the Dar es Salaam-Moscow route in July 2026, operating three flights a week via Zanzibar. The service restored direct scheduled air links between Tanzania and Russia after a gap of several years.
The route is significant for Tanzania’s tourism sector, providing direct access to the Russian market, while also strengthening air connectivity between East Africa and Russia.
The rapid reversal means Air Tanzania’s planned suspension will last only three days, with flights scheduled to resume on September 7.
The airline said it would continue monitoring operating conditions along the route in coordination with the relevant authorities.
