Press Release – 14/04/2025
Commenting on the passing of motion 8 at Annual Conference in Harrogate, Daniel Kebede, general secretary of the National Education Union, said:
“The increasing use of AI and the desire of big tech companies to expand their reach into state education means that it is really important that those working in education and their unions have a meaningful input into the development and use of AI. Teachers must be involved in shaping the use of AI in schools, and building the guardrails we need to see for classrooms and staff rooms.
“The commercial priorities of corporations should not be the only driver in how this powerful technology is used in schools. AI can’t be viewed as a route to cut costs or to promote learning environments which are repetitive or one-size-fits-all for students.
“As well as the introduction of more effective regulation of AI, the Government must invest in the workforce, and give them the resources, time, and skills to play an active role in shaping how it is used.
“AI is a potentially powerful tool to enhance and augment the learning environment which teachers and support staff create but it is not a short cut to delivering improvements in education. If AI is going to support a motivating and progressive vision for education, then educators and their unions must be in the driving seat, not big tech.”
