Apply and benefit from a training program on the conflict sensitive
journalism

As part of its “Governance, Peace and Stability” project funded by the French
Development Agency, the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) is offering to train 20
journalists from the Republic of Seychelles in conflict sensitive journalism.

1) Global objective
This activity aims to build the capacity of journalists to cover crisis situations.
More specifically, this training will aim to:

  • Educate journalists on their role as contributing to peace and stability during crises
    through the production and publication/broadcast of reliable information;
  • Seek the collaboration of media managers in the application of the lessons learned
    during the training;
  • Professionalize journalistic coverage in crisis situations;
  • Sensitize journalists to methods and attitudes for their safety;
  • To constitute a network of journalists sensitive to conflicts.

2) The project
The “Governance, Peace and Stability” (GPS) is a 8 million € project, funded by the French
Development Agency (AFD) and implemented by the IOC. The training component dedicated
to the coverage of situations of conflict aims to improve the quality of media coverage of this
sector by strengthening the skills of 20 journalists in Seychelles.

3) Activity implementation
The training program contains three main components to be delivered over three days.
Day 1: Reminder of the rules of journalistic ethics and professional conduct, the duties and
rights of journalists, with examples and practical cases.
Day 2: The safety of journalists in crisis situations. Practical work and preparation of a
commitment charter.
Day 3: Journalism and fake-news (namely generated by Artificial Intelligence)

4) Selection criteria
All applicants should be working for a media (public or private) duly registered with a national
operating license. A fair distribution of participants (radio, television, online media will be
sought in the selection.
Journalists applying for this training must demonstrate that they:

  • Are determined to strengthen their journalistic capacities of the work of democratic
    institutions;
  • Will make necessary arrangements to follow all training sessions;
  • Have obtained written authorization from their management to take the training.
    NB: Applications from female candidates is strongly encouraged.

5) How to apply?

The journalist must upload the following documents in pdf format to the platform:

  • Resume
  • Management authorization
  • Cover letter

6) Key dates:

  • Applications open from May 19t to June 2
  • Deadline for receipt of written applications: June 2 before 11h59 pm (UTC+4)
  • Selection of 20 journalists: June 7
  • Training in the Seychelles: 14 to 16 June, 2023

7) Pre-selection criteria
Applications will be examined by a jury composed of media professionals from the Indian Ocean
according to the following criteria:
