Construction Industry Can Help Create Climate-Resilient Forests

Construction companies can play a vital role in helping forests cope with climate change, by planting and harvesting certain trees that will be more adaptable.

In a recent publication in PNAS Nexus, researchers have underscored the critical importance of conducting comprehensive assessments of tree species across entire ecosystems to foster resilient forests in the face of climate change, while simultaneously promoting adaptability in the construction industry. This ground-breaking study, led by Peter Osborne and his team, sheds light on the influential role that builders and the construction sector play in shaping forest ecosystems through their selection and use of wood products.

Importantly, this tree species selection process can be fine-tuned to not only support ecological resilience in forests but also maximize functional diversity. The study’s authors advocate for a “forest-first” approach, urging the prioritization of timber species that align with forest management plans and timber-based construction projects. By adopting such practices, builders and the industry can contribute significantly to the preservation and adaptation of forests in an era of climate uncertainty
