Safe System Tool: Road Safety in Action

Media Release – 19 February 2025 – The International Transport Forum (ITF) is proud to announce the launch of the Safe System Tool, an innovative platform designed to support road safety assessments and interventions. This user-friendly tool empowers stakeholders to evaluate and enhance their strategies, projects, and plans, aligning them with the Safe System approach and to proactively reduce road deaths and severe injuries.

The Safe System approach is a paradigm shift in road safety thinking which focuses on proactive and systemic measures to prevent serious crashes before they occur. It emphasizes shared responsibility among all stakeholders to create a road network that is inherently safe for all users. By acknowledging human fallibility, the approach aims to design systems that are forgiving of mistakes, thereby preventing tragic outcomes. 

The Safe System Tool operationalizes this approach by providing a structured framework for users to assess their current road safety plans, project, policies. It visualizes opportunities for improvement and guides the identification of effective, evidence-based interventions. By facilitating a comprehensive understanding of existing strategies, the tool aids in the development of targeted actions to enhance road safety outcomes.

“Our roads will become safe only through collective effort” said ITF Secretary-General Young Tae Kim at the launch of the Safe System Tool during the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety taking place this week in Marrakech, Morocco. “The Safe System Tool fosters the kind of co-ordinated action from all groups with a stake in safety and health that will drive down the unacceptably high number of traffic victims.”

The tool is now accessible to all road safety professionals and stakeholders committed to advancing the Safe System approach. By leveraging this platform, users can contribute to the global mission of achieving zero road deaths and serious injuries.
